Demon Imps

Monday was surprisingly pleasant. I don’t have chairs or desks for half of my students, I don’t have books, and I don’t have a curriculum or pacing schedule. However, I have two amazing groups of students. One of them is also my seventh grade homeroom, and there are currently only 15 students. My eighth grade class is about 30 students, yet they were quite well behaved, considering that only half of them had seats. The others gamely sat on the floor or against the walls. My schedule is much better than last year, I have my own room with a fantastic view of Manhattan, and I work with amazing people. The only real thorn in my side is this nasty little woman who was demoted from the disbanded district office. She’s too tiny to be a demon, so I think of her as an imp. The secular world would call her a vicious, negative, omni-oppositional bitch, but because of her small stature, I’ll just call her an imp.

She is a frightened, negative woman who was pulled from her district office womb into the terrifying world of a real school, with retirement only two years away. She won’t share her classroom with anyone else, even though we are all sharing rooms. She hoards things like 15 excess chairs (which I need desperately). She NEVER helps anyone else, quickly angering all the support staff. I’ve made numerous attempts to bridge the gap, but her selfish tunnel vision prevents her from improving the situation. All during training she has been the nay-sayer, always finding the ways the new system will fail. She is a perfect example of why the system is a mess.
