Greater value

As a teacher, I have to be careful what I say, how I say it, and why I say it. Today I was reviewing number values and number lines with my seventh graders. One problem involved ordering numbers from least to greatest, example : –3 < 1/3 < 1/2 . Negative numbers are connected to IOU’s, fractions to parts of pizzas, etc. One really sweet kid had trouble after I talked about pizzas, saying 1/2 was less than 1/3. I asked him which he would rather have, 1/3 of a pizza, or 1/2 of a pizza. He kept saying 1/3, so I drew them for him. He said, “Mister, I’m a small guy. I can’t eat half a pizza.”

Rephrase to “Which is the largest amount of pizza?” He rewrites it perfectly.

Glenn, have you ever read (rather looked through) a Readers Digest (My parents used to give me a gift subsrciptin every year for x-mas!)? I think this would make a great "life in these unnited states" ot other such entry in the mag. They pay for it and I thinkit is better than many of theones i've read while in the Drs office waiting room!
personally, I am BIG guy and would prefer the whole pizza, if I were not dieting!
