Hell in Tomorrowland

Nothing like the surging panic rising inside of me about tomorrow, frothing about like the tidal wave directly after the Krakatoa explosion. Last year I barfed for the first few weeks, this year I hope to only barf if I drink too much. My future is fraught with possibility and potential disaster.

On the plus side:
I am a second year Math Immersion teacher, with tons of battle experience.
I am a meaner person and I will not smile for the first week. My plans include every child correctly assessing that I am insane.
I have some excellent teachers around me, a fairly good support staff, and a good university program.
I have experience with the new methodology from university classes.
Two of my classes have very good reputations, and the class size should be around 25 students.

On the negative side:
I have only 8 chairs and desks in my classroom.
I have NO student books or teacher edition.
I was assigned my classroom on Friday, so it is a mess.
I have no curriculum and no materials, yet I am expected to teach the new workshop methodology.

Monday is going to be the day of gray hairs.

Hi, Glenn. I've been thinking about you all week. I can't say anything other than, "Good Luck!" but I know you will find a way to do a good job. Always remember that you are smarter than 99% of the people on the planet.

glenn,

if any of your students want testimonials from your friends stating unequivocally that you are truly unhinged i'd be happy to provide them with stories, dates, times, police reports and sworn affidavits....

i'd also state that with all the negatives your students will face they have one overwhelming positive in their favor....
a teacher that devotedly cares about their futures, even when they don't.

no worries my friend, no worries.

as for the gray hairs....have you seen a mirror lately????

I think we should send you off each morning wearing the leather gear and clothes you've been sporting to the Eagle lately. That, combined with the "no smiling" approach should put them in their place!

It's worth repeating...

You're an honorable man who's made an admirable career choice. And since "I believe the children are our future" and that you're gonna "teach them well and let them lead the way", well...

What I mean is- you're a hero, dude.

-D

PS: Where's the link to that leather gear pic??
