Hurricane Schmurricane
Metaphorical hurricanes of my life sometimes coincide with the literal bad weather. My poverty days in Phoenix dissolved into the heat wave of 90, my horrible closeted days swirled around the Dallas tornadoes of 94, and my Peace Corps winter of discontent was blown away by the Siberian Express of 2000. Everyone knows the weather and I have been strangely connected over the last year and a half. My life has become increasingly buffeted by random phenomena, and no meteorologist wants to make a prediction about my future more than one week in advance. My metaphorical Farmer’s Almanac sees the giant storms of the present average to mere fluctuations against the pattern of my life, but I definitely don’t want to go through another horrifying winter. I could really use a mild winter with days where I can wear shorts.
