Material Lists
I remember when I was a kid how much I enjoyed going shopping for school supplies. My mom would let me hold the supply list, checking off Big Chief tablets, Elmer's Glue, boxes of non-PC crayons (remember Indian red or Flesh?), and weapons-grade compasses. They were the basics, but there were tons of unlisted deluxe options. More than anything else in the world, I wanted those clear pockets to hold things in a notebook. More than anything else in the world, I wanted a Trapper Keeper. More than anything else in the world, I wanted some of the Kangaroo sneakers with zipper pockets. More than anything else in the world, I wanted a wristwatch with a calculator, even thought they weighted fifty pounds. More than anything else in the world, I wanted those sneakers with roller skates built into the bases. Actually, I still want those.
Now I wander the same stores as a teacher, searching for supplies, looking for math materials. Some things never change, as I still get excited, especially in the rapidly changing world of compasses. The new models can't be used for stabbing, but otherwise are models of simplicity. A ten dollar calculator can outperform my first Radio Shack Color Computer, index cards come in different colors, and notebooks are perforated for removing the sheets.
I keep forgetting things, so I'm going to blog the list so I don't forget when I go this weekend. For those inclined to buy these and mail them to me (that means you, Mom), don't. However, I will be adding things to my Amazon wish list that would help my in my classes, as Barry gave me that idea. Cunning, cunning Barry.
Broom and scoop for the mouse turds in the closets
Reams and reams of paper for copies
3-Hole punch
Mechanical pencils
Ziplocks for materials
Vitamins (roaches are like children, but more hygienic)
A map of Brooklyn where my kids live
A map of the world that my kids haven't seen
Laminated sheets

A Radio Shack Color Computer! I had one of those -- even wrote games for it.
I think it still exists, but it's at the house of my father to whom I am not speaking...

Oh my God, your MOM reads this? I mean "Oh my Gosh!" Hi Mrs. B! How the hell are ya!?!
Glenn, I'm not sure which entry this is in response to but the excitement in your words about starting the school year is very apparent. Even with setbacks (a teacher who won't share? Children seated on floors?) you sound like you're in a good place...and you sound happy about it. Bravo!
See you at Bible study tonight!! Right Mrs. B?!?!

Hello Barry. Nice to meet you. Why wouldn't I read this. I love my son and I am very proud of him. I love the way he writes. Hopefully his friends are my friends.

Mom-
I don't go to bible classes, he's inimating that he is a high school buddy covering for my nighttime frolicking. It's the old fashioned "You're such a good boy, aren't you. AREN'T YOU?"

G!! Hi! Hope all is well. Decided to do a search on you in Google. How's NYC? I'll be back in Clovis in September. Drop me a line when you can.
