I need a new server

None of the spam blocking additions to Movable Type will work on my server, as the PERL is too old. I can't use Wordpress, as my server doesn't support Mod Rewrite. (I should mention that I have NO IDEA what this means, but I am having serious problems with my blog right now.)

Anyone with a good server recommendation will get whatever bonuses are available from that server, a slew of beers, or some other form of compensation, like installing shelves, or getting that bad outlet repaired.

Suggestions, PLEASE.

There's some hosting providers linked from the Movable Type homepage that offer MT preinstalled.

I've heard great things about Lunar Pages and I use Hosting Matters. Both use Fantastico and will install Wordpress with a couple clicks of the mouse.

i did a serious amount of research before I went with -- http://www.hostgator.com/

the smallest monthly plan is only $9.95 a month as has way, way more space and bandwith than any of the other hosts i checked. also, all of the perl, php, & sql scripts, etc. are way up to date. and they have fantastico installed which you can use to install wordpress for you.

if you need any more help, G ... let me know ... i'm so anal, i'm well versed at switching as when i did, i looked at more than i can count.

email me if you have any other questions and i can drop you my cell number as well. it'll be easy, i swear.

PS -- I'll take free beers in May as I am no longer allowed to rub that wonderful bald head now that you're all attached! ;) free booze is always welcome ...

Mod Rewrite is an Apache (web server) module that allows you to write rules to rewrite URLs as they come to the server. Is your web hosting company not using Linux or some Unix variant? If they are, they are certainly using Apache...

I know this isn't the least bit helpful, but I have two closets for which I need shelves installed.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm going to all of those sites, and I'll use one of them. I'll refer anyone to the account I switch to, I promise.

I may be too late for this, but I use DreamHost and would recommend them in a heartbeat. And MT-Blacklist works fine on their servers. I have their "Crazy Domain Insane" plan for $7.95, which includes one free domain registration, three full domains, 15 subdomains, 2400 MB Disk, 120 GB Transfer, 600 Mailboxes, and 75 Shell/FTP Users. I run both my site and the WYSIWYG site off of it and am not even close to using up all my server space. Also, their customer service folks are pretty helpful. I like 'em.

I use 1and1.com..their linux business package is 9.95 a month and it offers wordpress/php/mySQL support and hella free softward and features. Been using them for a full year now and a very satisified customer.

They even helped me trouble shoot when I was installing Wordpress and was filling in the wrong sections in the wp-config file. *G* You can also link from my blog
