The new neighbors
Welcome to nature in NYC.
One of the science teachers in my school made the mistake of asking students to bring in insects for a project. Every student brought in cockroaches.
We're having an experience with one type of rat. My definition of rat is quite flexible. NYC has rats of the ground (rats), rats of the sky (pigeons), and rats of the trees (squirrels).
Awwwww, aren't they sweet? Ummmm, no.
These little disease carriers are basically camping out on our stairwell. Bear goes insane every time they're outside, which makes for a relaxing afternoon. They have mites and fleas, and they can carry the plague.
I plan on killing them. It should be fun.

You know, of all the alerts we get at the hospital, I can't recall a plague warning. Poor squirrels! :)

Plague, squirrels - USA (Colorado)
October 21, 2004
A ProMED-mail post

Plague has been confirmed in a squirrel on the city's west side, and health officials launched a campaign to eradicate fleas that might transmit the disease to humans.
El Paso County Health Department workers also distributed pamphlets on the disease Tuesday to about 750 homes within a half-mile of the spot where the infected squirrel was found.
Residents began reporting dead squirrels in the area about 2 weeks ago, said Don Mydlowski, environmental quality manager for the health department. After tests confirmed plague, workers set out tubes that coat squirrels' fur with insecticide when they crawl through to get to a peanut butter bait. Mydlowski suggested area residents keep cats indoors and check with veterinarians about flea control for dogs and cats.
[It's a bad year for plague. The archival reports listed below are merely a selection. There are a total of 59 US plague reports in the ProMED-mail archives. Wandering domestic cats are at measurable risk of acquiring this disease in the affected states. - Mod.MHJ]

If you plan on killing squirrels, I wouldn't announce it here. Because it's probably not allowed in the city, and then there's PETA.

If the actual rats in NYC haven't spread the plague across the boroughs and beyond by now, I doubt the squirrels will. Unless they're actually in your house posing some threat to you, your boyfriend, or your dog, killing them is SO not cool.

Hooo doggie! Dead squirrel. Now thems some good eatins. Save me a leg, would ya?

I say whack 'em. They're rats with furry tails and if there are reports of plague, I wouldn't mess with that. Plus, there's the whole rabies thing. Screw PETA if they have an issue with it. I bet PETA won't pay for the rabies shots when the little rats attack either you, Derrick or Bear.

Bernard Goetz would not be pleased:

No doubt some dumb neighbor of yours is feeding them. That's why they are there all the time.
Little old lady down my street throws bread out her second story window every morning for the pigeons.
Especially charming when it hits me on the head on the way down.
Cheers,

Oh no, killing squirrels is totally bad karma. I would suggest getting one of those plastic owls- that should scare them away.

Mmm... squirrels.

I won't kill them, I promise.
I will still harass pigeons whenever possible, however.

AND they make nests in your walls! The meat is kind of dry, however. You have to use a lot of gravy.

Just as long as you don't sexually harass the pigeons. I hear they've got a really good lawyer who's preparing a solid class action suit.

Mites, fleas and carry disease. Sounds like my last date...

Kill 'em! Kill 'em ALL!!!!
...or not.

Those squirrels look sick and emaciated. You'd probably be doing them a favor by killing them. LOL
Just kidding PETA.

wow...seems like you've stirred up a fair amount of controversy here. my vote is to off the filthy buggers. that's right, i'm coming out as anti-squirrel. or at least anti-squirrel on my fire escape.

Kill 'em. There's plenty more where they came from. (This from a Hindu vegetarian, even.)
