Apology to the rest of NYC
I feel terrible, really. I've read the horror stories of people screwed over by the subway strike. So many of my teachers have had to sleep on couches here in Manhattan, leave 3 hours earlier to arrive on time, or carpool with chigger-infested drivers.
I hate to say that my life improved. My commute to work before the strike? 20 minutes. My commute after the strike? 20 minutes (I walk, by the way). School opened an hour later for teachers, two hours for students, so I could sleep in for an extra hour. A fraction of the kids attended, so I was able to devote more time to organization. I joined in the carpooling, so I didn't have to walk home, plus I left earlier than I normally ever leave.
All of my Christmas shopping was done weeks ago, we did our groceries on Monday, and Netlflix has kept us stocked with movies.
Keep fighting, union brothers!

I managed to "work from home" on Tuesday, but ran out of things to do. Tuesday was great, Wednesday was boring, and yesterday I schlepped to work via New Jersey, which was borderline horrific. I'm glad it's over.

I could leave at the same time and walk, and arrive just in time, as opposed to 15-20 minutes early with the train. (Given that there was no first period anyhow, there wasn't much point in arriving early.) I had what my sweetie describes as an arithmatic progression of students in attendance: 1 on Tuesday, 3 on Wednesday, and 5 on Thursday.
Yeah, it wasn't too terrible for me either, despite the minor shin splints and the tedium of sitting for 1.5 hours in an empty classroom.
Also, on Thursday morning I got a free ride down to school from a cab driver who just wanted to round up 3 bodies so he could cross 96th St. into the zone.
