Whither to go?
I've been stressing about my February 17-26 vacation time, as I feel I must precede any vacation with stress planning the vacation. My original idea was to head to southern AZ/southern CA, but that isn't gonna work out, as I delayed on the purchase of tickets. CURSES! The prices are about $100 too much, but I'll keep looking.
With a southern trip excluded, darling international Bob got me thinking that what I need is to explore some place new. Here are my ideas, out of my normal zone:
Boston- Metropolitan, fun, boston bloggers and friends. Never been.
Rhode Island- Visiting my last state. Never been.
Philadelphia- Metropolitan, art museums, history. Never been.
Niagara. Waterfalls. Never been.
Florida. Not some place horrible and republican. Where is nice/affordable in FL?
Any other places? Advice? I need advice. I need some place warm, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards. Maybe some place cold with a hot jacuzzi?

Is this spring break? I wouldn't suggest Boston or Rhode Island then, unless you don't mind potential blizzards. I lived through a few of those when I lived there.

Why not just wander?
Our 20th anniversary is in Aug so we're going to Britain in Sept. We were just planning to just wander where the winds take us - Bath, Stonehenge, Glasgow, Edinburgh, etc.
I'd been watching Torchwood and was really keen to visit Cardiff. While on a website for the city, I was surprised to find Canada was playing in the Rugby World Cup 2007 in Millenium Stadium! While we'll be in the neighborhood!!! Long story longer, the tickets should arrive in a few weeks.
Go CANUCKS! WOOOOOOOO. (Hope those poor welsh don't expect the usual reserved Canadians. As Jack Nicolson said in the first Batman movie: "Wait'll they get a load of ME.")
So, I'm suggesting the Great Cana... sorry AMERICAN road trip. See the country up close. Meet the people. Taste the food. Smell the land.

Since I'm from Boston, I'd be biased, but if you've never been it's worth a visit. There's lots of historical sites, museums, and lovely side trips to places like Salem (witches), Plymouth, Lexington and Concord, Gloucester/Rockport...all good. Great seafood, lots of restaurants, college crowds. Downers: The weather will suck, probably...possibly blizzard. It's not the easiest place to get laid either...others might differ on that point.
Save Rhode Island for the summertime. I like to drive to Provincetown on Cape Cod and spend a night in Newport on the way, which has luxurious Gilded Age mansions on the seacoast and a historic feel to the town.
Of course, if you fly anywhere the same kind of winter weather is going to probably kill your vacation (flights cancelled, overbooked, etc.)
If you go most places in Florida you'll have to rent a car unless you want to stick to South Beach or Key West. Orlando can be fun but the drive to the seacoast takes an hour or two.
Have you given a thought to San Juan? The airfare might be a little more, but you'd get honest-to-god tropical weather and gorgeous beaches...can be as affordable as Florida if you plan it right.
Another place to consider is New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Price airfare to Baton Rouge and Gulfport and rent a car...might end up being cheaper than Florida and be a bit balmier than Boston or Philadelphia.
I hate Philadelphia, by the way. It's not a "walking city" as much as other eastern cities go, in my experience it's been dirty (things may have changed on this point), and it definitely has a crime problem.
Other places to think about? My favorite city in Texas is San Antonio...can be a real fun experience and great weather. Other warm cities include Las Vegas, San Diego, Palm Springs, and Tucson...don't know what airfare is like right now. If you want a real winter vacation, drive up to Quebec City for their Winter Carnival...a gorgeous city with gorgeous men.
God, I sound like a Baedaker's guide.

allen likes pensacola florida. i've heard naples fl is nice. i loved boston! have you read steinbeck's "travels with charley"? it's like what the canadian guy just said about an american road trip. i loved it. i'm not sure how much of america you'd want to cover in 10 days though. i think that would make a good summer vacation, and it would beat summer school. just don't come to texas in the summer, ever. the blue ridge mountains in georgia are very nice. i haven't been to the smoky mountains ntl park by knoxville tn, but it sounds great too. i'm so jealous you get to live in ny and take vacations to places with art galleries and museums. tell me if you ever want to go to denver and i can tell you 100 things to do and places to eat and drink, seriously, i live to gush about denver.

Boston and Providence (and Philly) will be wicked cold. What about some sort of Caribbean destination on JetBlue? That said, you could do both Providence and Boston in one trip, Providence is even at the end of one of the MBTA commuter rails for the fiscally minded. I also LOVE Philly. If I could bear to leave New York, I'd move there.

My personal experience was that both Boston and Philly were overrated, especially Philly.
How about Savannah or Charleston? Or you could do something touristy/tacky like go to Memphis and see Graceland. They have really good blues and BBQ there, too, if you're into that.

I guess it depends on what you find affordable. For Philly, I've only been to their lovely airport. I liked Boston, but so much of it is walking - which is fine if you don't mind the winter weather and the 14 miles of Freedom Trail.
Never been to Niagara in winter. I do love the falls though - both sides. They are magnificient. If you go, it really is a must to walk through the American park to get to the American falls. But the Canadian side is nice. A block away is T-A-C-K-Y, but doable.
Florida? If you're looking to veg w/not a lot of nightlife - Siesta Key has the best beach. Good food. And it's about 2 miles from the movie theatre Pee Wee got arrested in.....which happened to be the first porn theatre I was ever in....and I was 16. But the theatre is now torn down.
You're always welcome in Cleveland. We have spare rooms.

I agree with the general theme of the previous commenters. Traveling in New England during the winter = disaster. You will be stuck in a blizzard. It's a universal constant.
In as much, what about D.C., or someplace warmer like that? Fun, historical, and only a train ride away.

Well, if you show up in AZ you are more than welcome to stay with me for free!

Not too much longer now and you can come visit me in Oregon! We can tour the Columbia Gorge and the Oregon Coast. There's a bunch of hot springs resorts out there, too...one of them has to be gay friendly.

Niagara in February? Don't do it. Trust me.
Posted by: scottevill at January 25, 2007 02:58 PM
I recently went to Niagara Falls for the first time. It's pretty amazing. I don't recommend the US side (where I ended up), but the Canadian side looked more interesting and fun. Plus, there's Toronto nearby. NF seems like something everyone out here should do at some point.

Hmmm... Well, I've been known to have a negative attitude toward Boston - at least the gay nightlife - so I shouldn't comment. The historic areas are good to visit, but it's kinda cold right now. Love to meet again, etc, but I fear it'd be a pretty boring experience.
Providence, RI, actually has a fun (IMO) gay nightlife. Used to hop down there alot. Oh yeah, there's a sexclub there too. Mainly filled with Bostonians, I think :) Uh, still frakking cold.
Phily - no clue. Niagra... uh, pretty. COLD. But close to Montreal!
But wait: How come no one's mentioned Ft. Lauderdale?!? It's frakking gayville, especially in Wilton Mannors. You can get relatively cheap hotels/motels/etc, if I remember. Crap - *I'd* love to go right now, actually.

Hmm, these people talk about being stuck in a blizzard like it's a bad thing! Ok, if you are deprived of sufficient heat, food, shelter and such I guess that's pretty bad, but otherwise, heck, it can be an adventure! My feelings are doubtless still colored by the Blizzard of '78, when I was in suburban Boston, and every night for about 2 weeks then-gov Mike Dukakis would come on TV and tell us there would be no school the next day. That is probably why I also still have fond feelings toward Michael Dukakis.
So go see New England if you want. I spent a New Year's Eve weekend on the Cape, and ok, had no circulation in my toes for 3 days, but it was fun nevertheless.
I also think Philly is cute (lived there in 92-93). Went to Niagra on a family vacation many years ago, and remember the tackiness, and that the Maid of the Mist boatride felt like being on a boat during a rainstorm.
Being probably the only northeastern Jew who has never been to Florida, I have no comments on that state.
Bon Voyage!

Well Cleveland is pretty fabulous ANY time of the year. You name it, we got it here! And in February, well, it could be 65 at noon and 15 degrees by 5 p.m. You just never can tell and it keeps you on your toes! Art, food, industry, poor people, a big lake, the list is endless! I dare you to come and discover one of America's best kept secrets. Be the first on your block.

No one has mentioned Washington D.C. A favorite of mine! Great museums, great food, great clubs.
And decent weather in the spring.
