Science Fiction Nightmare

I love fantasy and sci-fi novels. It doesn't matter if the book is good or not, and it usually is not.

Back in 1990, I cracked open a book called The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. I thought to myself, "Hey self! This is pretty good! And, by the way, when are you going to start having sex with men?" I ignored the second part of the comment, and focused on the book.

ELEVEN BOOKS and approximately 8000 pages later, I had become a bit frustrated (the same was true around 1995 about not having sex with men). The story line was so wildly complicated and populated with so many characters that I had a hard time getting through the last book in 2005. Supposedly he was claiming he was going to wrap up the story with a final twelfth book that was going to be about 1500 pages long. I was looking forward to any attempt to close out the series, as it was pretty good.

He just died, and my condolences to his family and to the thousands of nerds like me who now are left hanging. Dangit.

I heard a rumor that his wife is going to finish the last book or two. That he left notes and everything. There are a bunch of scifi fantasy nerds in my classes. Thus the source might be dependable.

Not necessarily hanging... go back and read the wiki page about "final volume:"

"On October 18, 2005, at a book signing in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Jordan gave the working title of the 12th book as A Memory of Light. As one of the attendees told Dragonmount.com, Jordan also warned that the final volume of the saga "could be a 1500-page monster" because he has so many dangling plot threads to wrap up in a single volume. He maintained that A Memory of Light would remain one volume "whether it is 1500 pages long, Tor has to invent a new binding system, or it comes with its own library cart". Due to his health problems, Jordan did not work at full force on the final installment, but blog entries confirmed that he continued work on it until his death, and he shared all of the significant plot details with his family not long before he died."

Even just trying to start up with "Wheel of Time" again makes my head hurt. And I managed to get through through all of the multiple storylines and character devs in the "Island in the Sea of Time/Emberverse" stuff by S.M. Stirling in one piece.

At least it's not "Gor"... *gouges eyes out for 26 volumes*

I am so glad I didn't get caught up in that one. God knows, I read enough sci-fi series. I am glad to note however that you managed to find the time to start having sex with men. Though some of my dates could probably rate as sci-fi, if not horror.

I was so sad to hear about Jordan's untimely death, and totally freaked about the last book. The wiki entry states he imparted final plot details to "his family" and he was friends with Tom D. the head of Tor, so someone, somewhere, will wrap it up, I hope.
If you like Jordan, try George R.R. Martin's series -- starts with 'Game of Thrones' amazing (but also not finished and slow to publish).
Also, two new authors with great starts in the genre are Scott Lynch with "The Lies of Locke Lamorra" (think swashbuckling con artists. It's got a dash of 'Oliver Twist', a touch of 'It Takes a Thief' and a wee sprinkling of 'Deadwood') -- and it's out in paperback, which is nice. Or "The Name of the Wind" by ... er ... another new guy. That's first in a series but I think he's written in advance of publication, so it won't be so long between books.

And I think underwear photos of you and Derek, in go-go mode, might make a very good post. Just my two cents, in both US and Canadian coin.
Cheers!

I agree w/ Jaunty John--George R.R. Martin's books are great. I stopped Jordan after the 5th one. He wasn't killing anyone, and I like death and mayhem.
Oh! Hey, I'm gonna be in NYC the end of October. Meet for coffee?

The 12th book will be finished eventually. There's too much money to be made, not to mention the legions of fans worldwide.

That being said, I think people should leave his family alone until their grieving period passes.

Palochi -- could be worse. Terry Brooks' Xanth series is at 31 volumes and growing. =P

I think I got as far as book 8. The first several books were fantastic -- and I kept on waiting for a stunning conclusion that never ... not then ... never ... not then either ... never ... not evern ... never ended.

I think I just lost my patience with it all. I ended up reselling my used books and stopped paying attention to announcements regarding the newest, latest, but definitely not final volume.

Upon finishing this post, I burst out laughing. Then shut up -- you aren't supposed to laugh at the dead. But he really got all of his readers in quite a pickle didn't he.

I hope the ghost writers can live up to the tast -- pun intended.

So, did you ever end up having sex with men? :)
